VECL Comes to Chennai — And the Pathway Runs Both Ways
Season 1 of VECL India begins in January 2027. Four clubs. A full season of Sundays. Selectors from IPL franchises watching. And for the first time, a route between Melbourne and Chennai that runs in both directions.
The Victorian Elite Cricket League started in 2024 with a simple idea: give young cricketers a real competition to play in. Turf wickets. Proper T20. A season that means something.
Two years on, more than 400 junior cricketers from Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and the ACT have pulled on a VECL shirt. Now VECL is crossing the ocean.
VECL India — Chennai, Season 1
In January 2027, the Victorian Elite Cricket League launches its first overseas season in Chennai. Four league-owned clubs. A full season played every Sunday from January to April. Every match on camera. Every ball scored live. And squads picked exactly the way they are picked here — through open team selection, in front of a panel, on merit alone. It is the model that built VECL in Melbourne, taken to one of the most cricket-obsessed cities on earth.
A pathway that runs both ways
This is the part that matters for our players.
VECL India is not a separate league. It is the other half of the same one — and from Season 1, the two are connected. Australian players can apply to play in the VECL India Open. That means competing in Chennai, on Indian soil, in Indian conditions, against players who have come up in one of the deepest talent pools in world cricket. There is no substitute for it. Ask any cricketer who has toured the subcontinent what it did for their game — the pace off the pitch, the spin, the noise, the standard of the opposition.
And it runs the other way. In December 2027 we intend to bring 10 to 15 Season 1 players from Chennai to Melbourne for the VECL tournament. Not a token place or two — a touring squad, playing our competition, in our conditions, in front of our clubs and our coaches.
One league, seven clubs, two countries
VECL is no longer a Victorian competition with an overseas cousin. From Season 1 it is a single league operating across two countries. In Melbourne — Northern Warriors, Eastern Panthers, Western Falcons. In Chennai — Sholinganallur Sharks, Medavakkam Magnets, Velachery Vikings, Perungudi Panthers. Seven clubs. Two countries. Players moving in both directions.
And they will be watching
Here is what makes Chennai different. Selectors from IPL franchises will be attending VECL India matches. An Australian player who earns a place in the VECL India Open is not simply playing a tournament overseas. They are batting and bowling in front of the people whose job it is to find cricketers, in the country where the game is watched harder than anywhere on earth. Opportunities like that are never advertised. They happen because somebody was in the right place, playing well, on a day somebody who mattered was watching. For a young Australian cricketer, that day is worth getting on a plane for.
Play the whole season, or just the Sundays you are there
And here is the part that makes it possible: you do not have to commit to sixteen Sundays.
Many of our families are in India over the summer anyway — visiting grandparents, home for the holidays, three weeks in Chennai in January. If your child is there, they can play. Play the full season, or play the rounds you are there for. Both work.
This is not about sending a young cricketer across the world for four months. It is about turning a family trip that was already happening into three or four Sundays of real, competitive, filmed cricket, in front of the people described above.
If you are travelling to India this summer, this is the easiest yes your child will ever get from you.

If you have played VECL — JT20, our indoor competition, or any VECL tournament — you are eligible to apply. Places will be limited, and selection will be on merit.
